How To: Crochet Hair Accessories

A long time ago, I wrote a post about some hair clips I made. Today, since I'm not selling them anymore, I would do a tutorial on how to make them. They are super easy and super cute. I recently just gave a set to my friend's three year old daughter, and she loved them!

I've made several different kinds, but the directions are pretty much the same for any of them.

Supplies:

• Embroidery floss, various colors
• Hair accessories and clips (I bought mine at Hobby Lobby)
• Headbands (I bought a 6 pack of cloth covered ones at the Dollar Tree)
• Various buttons and plastic jewels
• Sewing needle
• Crochet hook (I used size a size B hook)
• Hot glue gun

 Start by crocheting some flowers and leaves. I'm not going to attempt to write a pattern for these. Instead I'll share some links for good patterns I've found online.

They're pretty easy to make and offer so much variety.

In several of the pictures, you can see that I made multiple sizes of flowers in the same color and layered them.
This can be done by changing the size of the circle you begin with. I then sewed the flowers, or flowers and leaves together.

Once you have your flowers done the way you want them, you can add any jewels or buttons. I did this in two ways. I sewed on all of the actual buttons with a coordinating thread or floss.
I used hot glue to glue on the jewel centers.

After that, it's just a matter of hot gluing the flowers to the hair accessories. I arrange them first to see how it looks, then hot glue everything into place. Make sure the flowers are attached firmly, so that they are not easy for little hands to pull off.

I just love these because they are so easily customizable. You could make them to match specific outfits or for specific events. How cute would a flower girl look in these? They make great gifts too!

For a more grown up look, I made a couple with an off white lace weight yarn. I did a dainty layered flower and attached it to a comb. It looked super cute in a country chic way. I liked tucking it into a twisted updo. Unfortunately, I lent it to someone and never got it back, so I can't show you pictures of that. The point is, it's really easy to make this idea work for grown up girls too!

Snow Day = Work Day

We had ANOTHER snow day today. Surprise! When was the last time we had a full week of school? I enjoy every snow day, but they are making it very difficult to teach, and I don't particularly want to still be in school in JULY. 

All that being said, another snow day meant I had more time to work on these new projects for the giveaway (there's still time to enter). Below are some of my favorites.

Also, I want to try this new project I found through Craftzine.com from Craft is Cool's blog. 

Wouldn't it be cool to have a little army of baby monsters? If I had a little boy, I would put a ton of these all over his room. Also, it's a super cool project for beginner crocheters. The tutorial is SUPER simplified. It would probably be easy to put a little rattle or other noisemaker inside. I would probably use fabric paint instead of plastic eyes to remove any choking hazards. I look forward to trying this! I also think I'm going to use this idea as a spring board for an owl baby mobile for Traci.

Sneak Peek!

 Just wanted to give you all a sneak peek of some of the giveaway prizes. I used some of the ideas from comments as inspiration, and worked all weekend on getting some products together. There are many more things to come including little girl headbands and pins for hats, but take a look at these hair clips and combs.

Ideas Coming Out of My Ears and a Giveaway!

Last week (or was it two weeks ago now?) Johanna and her mom gave me a suggestion that prompted some other ideas that I can't believe I didn't already think of!

Their idea was to make and sell some plain hats and then sell flower pins separately allowing customers to customize their own hats. I LOVE the idea and am working on it now. I plan to list plain hats in various colors and then list flowers, individually and in sets of probably three. I think I'll list specific sets, and leave the option of customization (color and style) open.

In addition, I have decided to  start selling flower hair clips, bobby pins, and headbands, both crocheted headbands and regular headbands. I've started making some flowers in different colors and styles, but won't be posting the new items in my Etsy store until I have time to buy the materials needed and really do this right. Today's snow day helped and hindered in this process as I had lots of time to work, but couldn't really go out and get the materials I need.

I also need your help! I'm posting some pictures of the flowers I've made so far. The pictures don't do them justice, but it's all I have right now. Anyway, please leave a comment with your opinion of this whole idea. Do you have any suggestions for colors or designs? What would you like to see me make? Would you make any changes? Slippers Galore!

So I finally have made the time to make another blog post. I've been working hard with school stuff and Christmas present making and a little while ago, planning Traci's shower. I hope to post pictures of that soon. Not the shower itself, but the decorations because I'm so proud of how I coordinated everything. For that I must wait until Traci returns so I can commandeer them from her camera.

A few weeks ago I decided I wanted to make some slippers, but not the grandma-ish ones my grandmother makes (go figure), but rather something that's at least cute if not stylish (can slippers be stylish?). So I did a google search for free patterns. It took me awhile to find one that I liked AND understood. Because Oma taught me to crochet, I don't know alot of the terminology; I've had to teach myself most of it through books, etc. Anyway, I found a free pattern by The Little House by the Sea which I really liked, then I embelished it a little with details, different yarns, buttons, and fabric paint on the bottom to prevent slipping. The outcome was a Christmas gift explosion. Below are some of the pictures. I'm thinking about posting them for sale on my etsy shop, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. Opinions? Suggestions?


I hope to also soon be posting some new glasses I've painted, Christmas glasses, as well as pictures of the mugs I made as favors for Traci's shower. I plant to post all of them on my etsy this week and promote them as Christmas gifts. Anyway, stay tuned to see them!

More Glasses

I spent my day painting today. I took pictures, but they were on my cell phone so they aren't very good. The ocean glasses look much better in real life. They look terrible in the pictures. With the light shining through them you can't really see the picture itself. Once I take some good pictures I'll list them on my Etsy.
